Charlottesville's free July 4 celebration at Tonsler Park ended in a fireworks show in 2026. The 2027 plan is not out yet; all home fireworks are illegal in the city.
Last checked Oct. 18, 2026. This page is updated each year. The 2027 plans have not been announced, so this page describes the 2026 celebration from the City of Charlottesville’s June 11 release and the Charlottesville Fire Department’s June 29 fireworks reminder. We will update it when the city announces the 2027 event.
Charlottesville’s Fourth of July fireworks in 2026 were the finale of a free, all-day community celebration at Benjamin Tonsler Park, 500 Cherry Ave. The Charlottesville Police Department, the Tonsler League and DJ Runway hosted the event, which the city described as its free Independence Day celebration. It ended after sundown with a professionally managed fireworks display. July 4, 2027, falls on a Sunday; the city has not yet said whether the Tonsler Park event returns or when.

The 2026 celebration at Tonsler Park
- Where: Benjamin Tonsler Park, 500 Cherry Ave. The city calls it one of the busiest parks in Charlottesville.
- What: the Tonsler League basketball tournament, an All-Star game between the Tonsler League and Richmond’s OTH League, a Jr. Tonsler League showcase, food, games, family activities and music from DJ Runway.
- The fireworks: a professionally managed show to close the evening, after the sun went down.
- Cost: free. The hosts asked people to bring a chair.
The event marked the Fourth in the year of the 250th anniversary of the United States. The city has not published a map, parking plan or road closures for it.
Fireworks at home are illegal
The Charlottesville Fire Department says all fireworks are prohibited inside city limits, including sparklers, whether or not they are legal in Albemarle County or elsewhere in Virginia. Under the Virginia Fire Prevention Code, possessing or using illegal fireworks can lead to criminal charges and confiscation, and a violation can be prosecuted as a Class 1 misdemeanor. The department said it takes a zero-tolerance approach unless a show is permitted and run by certified professionals.
“The safest way to enjoy fireworks is to leave them to trained professionals,” Fire Chief Michael Thomas said in the department’s June 29 release.
What else changes on July 4
- Trash and recycling: no pickup on Independence Day. Collection resumes the next working day and runs a day behind through Saturday. When the holiday falls on a weekend, the city says the schedule may change and posts it on its news page. See the trash and recycling guide.
- City offices close for the holiday.
- City Market: the Saturday market opened on July 4, 2026, but closed at 11 a.m. instead of 1 p.m. because forecasters predicted a heat index near 103 degrees. In 2027 the Fourth is a Sunday, and the market runs on Saturdays.
- Heat: Charlottesville opens cooling centers in heat waves. Check the city’s news page.
