Dominion Energy supplies electricity in Charlottesville. Report an outage or downed line at 866-366-4357 and check the Dominion outage map.

Charlottesville’s electricity comes from Dominion Energy. If your power goes out, report it to Dominion at 866-366-4357 or on its outage map; the city does not restore electric service. The city does run its own natural gas, water and sewer utilities, so a gas leak or water main break goes to Charlottesville Utilities instead.

Downed lines

Gas, water and sewer: the city’s own utilities
Charlottesville Utilities serves more than 19,500 gas accounts and more than 14,250 water and sewer accounts, according to the city. During a storm:
- Smell gas? Leave right away without trying to find the leak, and call 434-293-9164 or 911 from outside. Signs of a leak include a rotten-egg odor, a hissing sound, blowing dirt or bubbling water.
- Carbon monoxide alarm? Leave the house and call Charlottesville Gas from a neighbor’s or a cellphone. The city recommends CO detectors in every home with gas appliances.
- Water main break or sewer overflow: same 24-hour number, 434-293-9164.
- Billing questions: Utility Billing, 434-970-3211, 8 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. by phone.
Help with heating and utility bills
The city takes part in two programs that help with gas heating bills:
- Virginia Energy Assistance Program: state help with heating costs for eligible households, whatever the fuel. Income and resource rules come from the Department of Social Services.
- Charlottesville Gas Assistance Program (GAP): city help for people heating with natural gas who are in financial need but do not qualify for state fuel assistance, or whose state allotment has run out. Applicants document a hardship, such as unpaid leave from work, unemployment benefits or medical bills. See the GAP page.
- Water and Wastewater Assistance Programs: help with water and sewer bills for eligible households. See the water assistance page.
Ask Utility Billing at 434-970-3211 about eligibility for any of them.
Outside the city
Some homes in Albemarle County are served by Central Virginia Electric Cooperative, not Dominion. If your bill comes from the co-op, report outages at 800-367-2832 or on the CVEC outage map.
Dominion and the city
On Sept. 11, the city said it is joining the State Corporation Commission’s review of the proposed Dominion Energy/NextEra merger as a respondent. The city said it will press for fair rates, reliable service and progress on its climate goals, and will raise concerns about utility poles that block sidewalks and about updating Dominion’s franchise agreements for city rights-of-way.
