Last checked Nov. 2, 2026. This page is refreshed weekly. Facts come from the City of Charlottesville’s Traffic Advisories and Sidewalk Closures page and news releases, the Virginia Department of Transportation’s Culpeper District weekly traffic alert for Nov. 2-6, its Culpeper District projects and 511 Virginia.

VDOT closes the Plank Road bridge at Cove Garden Road in Albemarle County 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays from Monday, Nov. 2, to Dec. 11 for deck repairs, and Stribling Avenue has lane closures and flaggers for water line work through Friday. Monday is the last scheduled day of the one-lane, flagged stretch of Jefferson Park Avenue near UVA, and the Locust Avenue water main work is due to start in early November. The city maintains its own streets, so most closures inside city limits come from the city. I-64, the U.S. 29 bypass and the roads around the city in Albemarle County belong to VDOT.

Jefferson Park Avenue: crane removal, last day Monday

Crews are removing a tower crane from the construction site at 2005 Jefferson Park Avenue 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily through Monday, Nov. 2, weather permitting, the city said. The city had not posted an extension as of Nov. 2. The westbound lane of Jefferson Park Avenue between Washington Avenue and Observatory Avenue is closed. Flaggers send westbound traffic through the eastbound lane and hold traffic in both directions. The city did not post a detour; it asked drivers to expect delays and avoid the area if they can. Read the Jefferson Park Avenue advisory.

Stribling Avenue: water line, through Friday

A contractor is installing a water line under Stribling Avenue between Nob Hill Circle and Huntley Avenue, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily through Friday, Nov. 6, weather permitting. Expect lane closures and flaggers. The city says neighborhood and emergency traffic can get through at all times. Read the Stribling Avenue advisory.

Locust Avenue water line, phase two

The Department of Utilities is replacing the 1924 water main under Locust Avenue. In an Oct. 27 update the city moved the start of section one, between Locust Lane and Smith Street, to early November; it had been scheduled for the week of Oct. 19. Each section should take three to four months. Work then pauses until early summer 2027, when crews move to the stretch between Smith Street and the U.S. 250 bridge. The city’s utilities projects page carries the traffic control plan. Questions go to project manager Jim Keller, 434-970-3908, kellerj@charlottesville.gov.

Preston Avenue and Harris Street

Night work closed lanes at the Preston Avenue and Harris Street intersection Oct. 21 and Oct. 22. The city says pedestrian work there, including upgraded accessible curb ramps, should finish in November. Separate night work at the Preston Avenue, Grady Avenue and 10th Street NW intersection ran through Oct. 29. No new night dates had been posted as of Nov. 2. Read the Preston Avenue advisory.

City paving

The fall paving list the city announced Oct. 15 was scheduled to finish with Troost Court on Oct. 28. As of Nov. 2 the city had not posted an update, so we could not confirm that every street finished on its date. Read the paving advisory.

Emmet Street

VDOT lists permit work with alternating lane closures on Emmet Street (Business U.S. 29) between Lewis Mountain Road and Barracks Road, starting at 9 a.m. on work days, through Dec. 31.
