ID at the polls
Virginia asks in-person voters to show acceptable ID. Examples the registrar lists include a Virginia driver’s license or DMV-issued ID card, an employee photo ID, a U.S. military ID and a student ID from a Virginia college or university. An out-of-state driver’s license does not count. A voter without acceptable ID can sign an ID confirmation statement, under penalty of a felony, that they are the registered voter; otherwise they vote a provisional ballot.
Registering or updating
Register or update your address online with the Virginia Department of Elections if you have a Virginia driver’s license or DMV ID, or in person at the registrar’s office. The registrar warns that the line between Charlottesville and Albemarle County confuses many voters: if the state’s lookup says “Record Not Found,” try Albemarle, then your previous Virginia locality. Students who use a parent’s address for DMV can switch their registration home without meaning to.
Getting there and accessibility
The registrar’s office is next to the Ting Pavilion, across the Downtown Mall from the transit station. Paid parking is in the Market Street Garage, with street parking on both sides of the Annex. Every polling place offers an accessible ballot-marking device, and curbside voting is available to anyone with a disability or limited mobility and anyone over 65.
