Charlottesville City Schools' revised 2027-28 draft starts Aug. 11, 2027, and ends June 1, 2028. Comment until Wednesday, Nov. 4; the board sees it Nov. 5.
Charlottesville City Schools has published a revised draft of its 2027-28 calendar. It starts classes Wednesday, Aug. 11, 2027, and ends them Thursday, June 1, 2028.
Families and staff can comment on the draft until Wednesday, Nov. 4. The School Board gets its first look at it at its Thursday, Nov. 5, meeting.
The district posted the revised draft on Wednesday, Oct. 28. It said the changes came from nearly 500 responses to its first survey on the calendar.
What changed from the first draft
The district named two changes:
- Both mental wellness days now fall on a Monday. They are Nov. 1, 2027, and March 6, 2028. Schools and division offices close on both.
- No more lone day off in March. Tuesday, March 7, 2028, is the presidential primary, and schools close because eight of them are polling places. The draft now pairs it with the Monday wellness day, so students get a four-day weekend instead of a single Tuesday off.
To make room, Presidents Day, Monday, Feb. 21, 2028, becomes a professional learning day. Students still stay home, but teachers work. The draft also marks it as a possible weather makeup day.
What stayed the same
- The year keeps 180 student days and 195 teacher days. The district said that returns it to a pre-pandemic schedule “to support academic achievement.”
- The division is still working with Albemarle County Public Schools, which is drafting its own 2027-28 calendar, to line the two up “as closely as possible.” The district said survey respondents called that a priority.
The ‘balanced’ calendar is off the table
The first survey also asked whether the division should explore a “balanced” calendar. That would keep 180 days but start earlier, with more frequent breaks and a shorter summer.
Sixty-one percent of respondents disagreed or strongly disagreed. The district said it “will not be exploring this further at this time.”
Key dates in the draft
These come from the district’s draft calendar (PDF), labeled Draft A-3. They can still change before the board approves a final version.
