Two of Charlottesville’s ice cream shops face each other on the Downtown Mall, and a second Chaps is on the Corner by the University of Virginia. The others are at Dairy Market on Grady Avenue, on Emmet Street North, on East High Street and on Jefferson Park Avenue, with a cake shop on 10th Street NW.
How we made this list. The places come from OpenStreetMap records inside Charlottesville’s city limits, the same data behind our local directory, checked against each place’s own website on Oct. 19, 2026. We left out Insomnia Cookies on the Corner, whose store page would not load for us; Krissy Cakes, which no longer appears in the Dairy Market merchant list; and Carpe Donut, whose web address no longer works. SugarBear’s Ivy Road shop is outside the city limits. Doughnuts and pastries are on our bakeries list. The list is alphabetical. It is not a ranking or a recommendation, and nobody paid to be on it. The places
Cake Bloom moved to 10th Street NW in January 2026, its site says. It sells cake by the slice in eight flavors, jumbo popovers and whole cakes, and runs a weekly afternoon tea and cake workshops.
Chaps Ice Cream has two shops: on the Downtown Mall, open from late morning, and on the Corner, which opens at 5 p.m. on weekdays and stays open late. Its site lists flavors for each shop and ice cream cakes.
Cold Stone Creamery on Emmet Street North near Barracks Road offers dine-in, pickup and delivery.
Kilwins on the Downtown Mall is a franchise of the chocolate and ice cream chain. Its page lists fudge, chocolates and ice cream.
Moo Thru started at a family dairy’s roadside stand in Remington in 2010, according to Dairy Market’s merchant page, and now has a counter inside the market on Grady Avenue. Dairy Market lists itself as closed Monday.
Pi-Napo Pizzeria on Jefferson Park Avenue near UVA is a Neapolitan pizza place that also lists Italian gelato and homemade Italian desserts.
SugarBear Gourmet Ice Cream in Martha Jefferson on East High Street makes its own ice cream and cakes and was on its fall hours when we checked.
