Legal notices for Charlottesville, such as public hearings, rezonings, budgets, foreclosures and estate notices, are published where Virginia law says they must be: in a newspaper of record, or an online-only news publication certified by the circuit court, and on the statewide notice website. Use this page to find them. Where the city posts its own notices, we link to them.

Where notices are published
Under Code of Virginia § 8.01-324, a notice required by law runs in a newspaper that qualifies as a newspaper of record for the jurisdiction. The law also lets an online-only news publication publish notices if the circuit court certifies it, after an audit of its local readership. In both cases the law requires:
- the complete notice on the publication’s own website, free to read, with a link to a public notice section from the homepage
- the notice posted on a searchable statewide repository run jointly by the state’s newspapers, which is publicnoticevirginia.com
Start at publicnoticevirginia.com, filter to Charlottesville and search by keyword.
Notices the city posts itself
- Federal housing and community development (CDBG and HOME): environmental review findings and requests to release federal funds. City CDBG/HOME notices.
- Bids and requests for proposals: Bid Postings.
- Transit: Charlottesville Area Transit’s federal Disadvantaged Business Enterprise goal and methodology. Transit public notices.
- Council and board agendas, which list public hearings, on the city’s boards and commissions site.
- Traffic, parking and sidewalk changes on the city’s Traffic Advisories page.
